Can you believe it our sweet boy is 9 months old today? As every month goes by it seems like time is going faster and faster---like we are running on turbo speed now.
Harrison is changing overnight-literally. He goes to bed not being able to do something and the next morning he does it like a pro. This is so incredibly amazing to watch, and I myself am a little jealous of his ability to pick us things so fast. I am beginning to feel older and older and learning doesn't come as easy or as quick as it once did.
These days Harrison is all about chewing and drooling on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he can get his little paws on. When we are outside his favorite thing is grabbing large clumps of grass and trying to show them in his mouth or the day we went to the beach and he grabbed sand and started shoveling it in. The poop after that wasn't great I have to admit. And...as far as drool, Harrison isn't shy about sharing it with anyone, in fact you are sure to wet a shower of drool when snuggle up with him. So...with all of this chewing and drooling you would think Harrison would have a mouth full of teeth or one at least? Nope, no teeth yet. Despite the fact he ran a low grade fever last week and a runny nose at daycare and has been as cranky as can be at home every night for more than a week. All I have to say, if it's this is really about about teeth, just come in already! We are ready to have our mellow baby back! In fact, just last night I dreamed he got 18 teeth overnight, CRAZY huh? That's what I thought.
The switch of Harrison to regular formula this month has been a challenge. The transition went well at first, but spiraled down hill from about day 4 of the switch. Since then we have tried several formulas, which have only caused him extreme gassiness and fussiness, that just two days ago we switched him back to his pre-term formula and he has been like a new baby since then. Keeping him on the higher calorie formula certainly isn't going to hurt him and we only have 3 more months of formula!
Puffs have been introduced this month. And if you don't know what puffs are they are basically cereal pieces that he get soggy fairly fast. Harrison didn't do well with these at first (gagging and spitting them out), but he seems to be getting in the swing of things now. We sometimes put him in his high chair and let him play around with them and see how many he can actually make in his his mouth. Needless to say his depth perception has a LOT of fine tuning to do.
Harrison loves his toys...but two favorite new "toys" really aren't toys at all. The Winona Daily News Paper has never been so good. Harrison is infatuated with ripping up, chewing on and crumpling the morning paper. It's pretty amusing for mom and dad to watch as well. And secondly, the remote control is pretty awesome in Harrison's eyes. I actually just gave him his very own remote (without the batteries) this morning. He just loves it!
BANG, BANG, BANG---this a noise you will certainly be able to hear coming from our house? How come? Harrison's newest found love? BANGING. The sippy cut doesn't stand a chance as well as any other toys. He bangs hard and loud. I am waiting for the day Harrison bangs himself on the head. I am positive he will be sporting a black and blue bump.
I talk alot about Harrison's likes, well, he defiantly has some dislikes. The worst is wiping his nose and it seems like it needs to be wiped all the time. You would think after all of this wiping he would just get used to it, right? Ha, funny. It seems as though it is the worst thing I could do to him every time I do it. Secondly, Harrison no longer finds it entertaining to have his face and hands wiped off after meals, in fact, he absolutely despises it. I usually end up handing him a wipe and letting him wipe his own mouth and hands before I finish the job and he ends up getting angry with me.
Over the past month Harrison has got a little more vocal. He likes to say MMMMM, MMMMM is for everything. And vocally, he isn't shy about letting your know he is uphappy, he has no problem expressing his boredom. With this said, Harrison is on the move ALL THE TIME. Though he is not crawling yet, this child rolls everywhere! It will be only a matter of time until he starts crawling everywhere. Then the real baby proofing will start. I am not looking forward to this...crawling yes, baby proofing no.
So, what monthly update would not be complete without talking about poop? I have saved the best for last, right? Harrison regularly poops in his Exersaucer. AND...Poop these days is STINKY! It could and does clear a room! I am quickly learning solid food has an impact on this horrendous smell. We are going though wipes left and right.
I will be sure to post more updates throughout Harrison's 9 month journey. Sorry there is no photo update with this post, this is on our agenda. Harrison has had a photo shoot vacation while I have been busy with taking photos of some beautiful girls, a charming young man and adorable brother and sister. August 24, 2009 Grandpa Kelley became an angel. Sometimes we wonder why things happen the way they do, or why our path in life seems to twist and turn...
Harrison never had a opportunity to meet Grandpa Kelley... But just three months later Harrison arrived facing the challenge of battling a very premature birth. Harrison had a guardian angel by his side in his fight.

Public Restrooms...

No one is a fan of public restrooms...right?
RIGHT!
Doug and I do our grocery shopping at Woodmans in LaCrosse, WI. This is where we have shopped for years. So last Thursday we were shopping as normal with Harrison in tow when...we smelt this awful smell, which didn't take us long to realize this awful smell was Harrison! That's right, POOP!
I scooped up Harrison and headed straight for the women's bathroom (because daddy couldn't take Harrison in to the mens bathroom because it doesn't have a changing table--makes sense right?) Anyways back to the story...
I opened up the changing table and laid Harrison down on it when I arrived in the restroom. Just then a little girl (about 6 or 7) comes to dry her hands with the hand dryer which happens to be located directly next to the baby changing station. And let me tell you, these hand dryers are no regular hand dryers...they are the turbo hand dryers that actually move your skin when you are drying your hands. Well...apparently this girl liked the hand dryer so much she continued to "dry" her hands for what seemed like hours! In the mean time I have Harrison screaming at the top of his lungs---kicking off the wipes, throwing himself around because he is absolutely terrified of this high powered hand dryer. Finally the girl leaves after what I said felt like hours...(Where was this little girl's parents anyhow)? Thank Goodness!
After calming Harrison down I start changing his diaper (and might I remind---poop included)---
WHEN...
A women gets done washing her hands and heads straight to the dryer (right next to Harrison) and starts to dry her hands. What is ironic about this? This lady just heard Harrison crying and she also heard me referencing to Harrison that the dryer makes that noise and everything will be ok... I wanted to say to this lady, "For God sake air dry your hands!" (And those who know me well enough, know I would). Did she not see this helpless baby freaking out here?
The story continues...
NOT SO! This lady too spends what seems like hours trying to dry her hands very much like the little girl...
The result? Harrison begins to scream at the top of his lungs, kicks everything out of his way (including the poop filled diaper)...as I a trying to clean him up.
The total diaper change took so long that Doug started to head towards the restroom questioning if everything is alright?
NO!!! EVERYTHING IS NOT ALRIGHT!
Public restrooms need:
1. More space---the space is too small when you can't fit a stroller and a baby in the same stall you are planning to use.
2. Paper towels! What happened to the good old days where you washed your hands and dried them on a paper towel?
I could go one and on, but the list is endless.... The moral of the story? Public Restrooms suck (period).
And if you are wondering...I don't EVER plan on changing another diaper at the grocery store. Enough is enough!

It's so amazing how fast they grow up! I think Harrison grew a foot overnight last night! What happened to my baby boy?

I. am. relieved.
Harrison had a follow up appointment today with with the optometrist that followed him through his NICU stay. Harrison no longer has a preemie eye condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity (which is abnormal growth of the blood vessels in an infant's eye). At this time Harrison's vision is developing normally as full term baby baby's would. Thanks to this clean bill of sight, he doesn't come back for an exam for one year.
Next Harrison moved on to audiology for a hearing test. As I mentioned in a previous post, Harrison's doctor expressed some concern with Harrison's lack of babbling (baby talking) and thought a factor in this lack of "talking" may be contributed to hearing loss. After the test today the audiologist doesn't have any concerns with Harrison's hearing. Thank goodness! I can sleep better tonight knowing this! I didn't have any doubt he could hear, but when you faced with the possibility of something not being ok...is a whole different story.
It's seems as though Harrison is just a quiet boy like daddy!
Speaking of sleep...Harrison is sleeping, Whitney Dog is sleeping, Kitties are sleeping, Daddy is sleeping---it's time for Mommy to sleep!

Some days...Ok EVERYDAY I wish I was home with our little guy...
But what brightens my spirit when I am at work?

The staff at his daycare e-mailed me this photo when I was at work last week. Harrison was waiting for a bottle, and apparently they were taking to long.... He fell fast asleep on the floor. Harrison sure knows how to put a smile on their faces (and Mommy's too)!

Jenna and I have been good friends for a long time. We both married our high school sweethearts, we were in each other's weddings, we shop at the same places, we both love chocolate chip cookies, we both have adorable boys (4 months to the day apart) and we both have been struck by the photography bug!
The problem with growing older these days is not having enough time to get together. The "adult" things get in the way...like work, car/house payments and personally my favorite...Student Loans.
We manage to sneak some time in for some photos together on Sunday...and what a beautiful day!
I didn't get any good one of our boys...I am thankful Jenna did! And check out the expressions!

Today was a celebration of life with our boys. November 2009 changed our lives in way we never quite expected.
Quinn arrived November 18, 2009 weighing in at 1 lb 15 oz
Madden arrived November 21, 2009 weighing in at 1 lb 6 oz
Harrison arrived November 28, 2009 weighing in at 3 lb 3 oz
Lynn, Chelsea and I were all due in February 2010. With this unexpected arrival of our tiny miracles made us stronger people. We could have never overcome the obstacles of our sons prematurity without the love and support of our families.
Enjoy today's photos...they are a reminder that God made them small so that we can see that small things are strong too.
I think I can speak for both Lynn and Chelsea...Boys, we love you!
