What's in the basket you ask?

These all once fit Harrison... It was rather sad packing up yet another handful of clothes tonight and tucking them a way in this laundry basket. To lighten the moment I thought about our shopping trip earlier today and the several cute new purchases that were made... :)

Now, I just need to come up with a better storage system for outgrown clothes as well as grow into clothes... I am open to any suggestions!

Today marks 5 months of bliss with our miracle...

First off... (most recent photos)

What can I tell you about this boy?

Personality:
Harrison is starting to show his true colors to mommy and daddy. We have a variety of cries ranging from "I am cranky," to "My tummy is upset" to "I am hungry." I think you get the just of this.

Weight:
Most likely hovering around 14 pounds (sizing 0-3 months and 3-6 months). We are soon to graduate to size 2 in diapers.

Sleep Habits:
Naps 3-4 times a day
Bedtime: 9-10 PM
Wake up time: 5-6 AM

Eats:
4-5 ounces about every 3-5 hours

Favorite things to do:
-Play in his jungle gym (he will kick around and bat in the box endlessly)
-Suck on his hands and fists (he shoved a wash cloth in his mouth tonight)
-Be read to...He is rocked and read to almost every night

New things:

-It seems as though Harrison has discovered his own tongue as sticks it out now in more than half of his photos.
-Head control continues to improve
-Imintates the sounds ooooohhhh and ewwwwee
-Cries for reasons other than food

Other Stuff:

I have been meaning to mention how much money we raised for the March of Dimes. The total is more than $1,200! GREAT JOB!!! It's so fantastic---I just recieved an e-mail from the company where we purchased our t-shirts for the walk and that company made a donation to Team Baby Harrison. They wrote saying that they searched for our team on the March of Dimes website--so this was a pleasant and welcomed surprised.

We were also supposed to meet with the occupational therapist this past Monday as I mentioned in a previous post...but it has been rescheduled for Monday, May 3rd.

And I also have to mention I am SO excited to have won a bid on e-bay tonight. I am usually not into surfing around on e-bay...but I found a couple of things for a photo opt that I had to have!

Be sure to check back for photos :).

Last, but not least...Harrison is continuing to feel better, but a bit crabby tonight.

I've got something to say...

HELP! I am forgetting what my mommy's face looks like when it's behind a camera all the time...

Here is the latest short video clip of me...

5 months of bliss... Thank you our Baby Harrison!

Digestive Woes...

Harrison's digestive system is not his friend...

Where do I begin our day?

Harrison is normally a very happy baby...but not today.

Needless to say he was as far from happy as he could be...

Crying...LOTS OF IT! Inconsolable crying... for long periods of time...

Harrison has had digestive and to be specific elimination difficulties from birth. Today he was put over the edge... We ended up calling his doctor this morning and the doctor suggested we bring him in to be looked at.

The verdict...

VERY CONSTIPATED (which we assumed).

Constipation is very common in babies (and elderly as I know from my nursing home employment days). However, this was little more serious than your average back up (and needed immediate attention). I would go into more specific details (but that is not needed---use your own imagination).

Harrison is currently on some new medication which should help. We will follow up on this incident in couple of weeks.

We hope this will eliminate anymore tears and other further issues down the road. (The crying is already subsided substantially).

This was the scoop on his poop.

Back to work Monday...

Monday, April 26, 2010

Let's just say...Monday was definately a Monday at work today (enough said)...

Thank goodness I get to come home to this...

What ever did we do before this young man was born?

I am a support sitter!

Really?

Yes really...

Take a look at this...

On Sunday morning Harrison and I decided daddy had slept long enough and we decided to wake him up. As we were all cuddling...Harrison amazed us by practically sitting up. This is when we brought out the boppy pillow for some extra support and this is the result!

I (we) have to admit we were in total awww... We practiced lots more tonight and did quite well. I am hoping to get a short video clip of it later in the week.

So much changes everyday!!!

Who would have ever thought that you could love someone this much?

Mr. Harrison

I can't believe how much he changes everyday! Here is a brief update on our Harrison...

---He smiles in response to our smiles.
---He tries to imitate the sounds we make.
---He getting better at lifting his head up to look around.
---He can go 10-12 between feedings at night.
---He LOVES his swing.
---He would spends hours playing him his jungle gym if we let him.
---He falls asleep almost instantaneously when laying on your chest.
---He huffs and puffs when he gets excited and can squeal in delight.
---He is starting to drool like crazy and loves to suck on his hands and arm.

Other updates:

We are currently working with an early childhood education with Harrison. This is a program our community offers that works with premature babies. Last week we met with the physical therapist and on Monday we will be meeting with the occupational therapist. This doesn't mean that Harrison is behind developmentally...but rather we are being proactive for his development. We should know more after we meet Monday as far as how much therapy he will be getting. We also meet May 6th with some specialists from Gunderson.

Where are my feet???

He is absolutely the best thing in this entire world.

L-A-U-N-D-R-Y!

"Mommy...Can I help you?"

I brought the laundry up to put away... Harrison wanted to help of coarse! I have never had so much fun putting away a load of laundry!

Check out this helpful boy!

There is just so many to choose from...

Like the heading says...I have so many good photos to choose from. I'd post them all but that would take about 10 pages of the blog. (You can see all the other photos on Facebook).

He is just so darn cute!!!

More photos to come!!!!

Thank You! Thank You! Team Baby Harrison!!!

Vrooom! Vrooom!

Now...which side is the gas?

Driving instructions...

We thank God everyday for this little boy, our son...

I (we) have never felt so honored to be the 2010 Ambassador Family for the March of Dimes.

As I drove to work this morning---I was overwhelmed with emotions...some happiness, some sadness, some anger, and whole lot of hope. I didn't realize how talking to families who have been through what we have been though...would be so therapeutic. This was also a reminder of just how fortunate we are to have Harrison today. No two mission stories are the same.

I asked Doug on a walk tonight..."Why do some babies live and why do some have to die?" "Why can't every baby live?" This is what the March of Dimes is all about---walking for research, so that "one day, every baby will be born healthy."

As a individual... I would do anything to prevent this from happening to other families. No set of words could ever describe prematurity.

We thank God everyday for this little boy, our son.

Out of difficulties, grow miracles...

I am publishing this for those that couldn't take part in the March of Dimes Walk.

This is our mission story for the March of Dimes.

I did my best too hold it together and to share our story at today's walk...

Where am I? Who are all of these people? What is going on?

In labor? This can’t be happening… Wake me up, wake me up, someone please wake me up! This must definitely be a dream…No---you must have the wrong person…this kind of thing doesn’t happen to people like me.

November 28, 2009 changed our lives forever when our miracle arrived 11 weeks too soon weighing in at 3 pounds, 3 ounces and 16 inches long.

When I was a little girl I dreamt of meeting my prince charming, getting married and having lots and lots of babies! I met my prince charming in 2002 we were married on June 18, 2005. After 4 years of parenting practice with our two kitties and energetic Springer Spaniel we were elated to find out that we were going to be blessed with a baby boy.

Never did we ever expect the challenges we were about to face. Our son Harrison was expected to arrive on February 10, 2010. Life took an unexpected turn when he arrived nearly 3 months early. My husband and I were never so scared in our entire lives. The whole situation seemed so surreal.

I remember the first drive down to hospital to see our son the morning after he was born. I looked at my husband and said…this is the beginning of a very long road. As we arrived at the hospital we walked the long halls and road the elevator up to the 5 floor NICU, which would be home to our son for nearly 8 weeks.

I will always remember walking over to Harrison’s isolette for the first time and seeing this tiny baby fighting for his life. Tubes, lines and monitors covered his body. As parents we felt completely helpless. As a mother I blamed myself.

I had never been so angry at the world for what had happened…

As hours, days and weeks went by the reality of Harrison’s prematurity barreled in.…we stopped living the lives we once led. We had our life in the NICU and a life we were supposed to be living outside of those walls.

Life was a gigantic rollercoaster of emotions, struggles and gains. Set backs were inevitable and nothing could prepare you for reality of it all. We were afraid to celebrate gains because when something went well life would throw us a curve ball. I said to one of the nurses one day, “This place has made me the most un-trusting person.” Just when you think you have hit rock bottom, you are hit harder by a whirl-wind of challenges.

Harrison went from a ventilator, to c-pap to nasal prongs, and back to c-pap a half a dozen times. He underwent two blood transfusions and two rounds of drugs to help close the open valve in his heart. Next he faced issues with edema and was given several doses of diuretics to assist his breathing. Later struggles came with coordinating suck, swallow and breath during feedings and enduring countless periods of apnea and heart decelerations.

One step forward, two steps back. Despite the struggles, Harrison also made gains. As he continued to grow and mature, progress grew by leaps and bounds. Our 3 pound baby was now more than 5 pounds and feeding and breathing on his own.

Daily conversations with doctors went from when he goes home to he is going home. During the last two weeks in the NICU, the nurses used lecture Harrison and would say, “It’s time for you to go home.” It’s not that we wore out our NICU welcome…but indeed it was time to go home.

January 19, 2010 we walked the long halls and road the elevator to the 5th floor NICU for the last time. When we left the hospital that day, we left the hospital with our son.

Can we say for certain that our son would be here today without the help of March of Dimes?

No, we can’t. March of Dimes impacted the life of our son and family is so many ways.

Within minutes of birth Harrison was given surfactant. Surfactant keeps the air sacs in the lungs from collapsing making breathing easier in premature babies. The lungs are often underdeveloped and lack the production of surfactant. Receiving this treatment saves thousands of babies every year. Before the use of surfactant 10,000 babies died of respiratory distress syndrome each year. With the use of surfactant less the 1,000 babies die today. March of Dimes funded the research for this therapy.

The folic acid in prenatal vitamins has led to a decrease in birth defects, which is another contribution from the March of Dimes. New born screening tests including a hearing test have been made possible by the March of Dimes.

March of Dimes Advocacy for Preemies helps experts continue research for prevention for pre-term labor...so that more babies can be born at full term.

What can we do as individuals and families? Walk in support of this great organization. Spread the word---tell everyone about what March of Dimes has done. Ask for donations they won’t come to you, you have to go to them the worse somebody can say is no.

One day every baby will be born healthy.

Thank you March of Dimes!

Come walk with us!

"One day...
All babies will be born healthy.
We need to walk to get there."
