Miles @ 1 Month (Happy Due Date)

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

I am still waiting for someone to pinch me and tell me I am dreaming. This whole past month feels like dream, even though I do a little less dreaming these days.

I am not sure how I am going to photograph/update Miles each month. I have a had whole month to think about it and haven't made a decision. So for the first few months, it might be a little all over the place until I find a rhythm I am satisfied with. I know I want to include Bee each month tracking his growth, but other than that, I'll figure the rest out as we go. I plan to track Miles growth/changes in photos and summary as I did for Harrison for the first 36 months. Having two at home now I might not get the posts up the day of each month (the 13th), but hopefully soon after that.

Are you ready? So here we go.

Sleep: Comparing Miles to Harrison, Harrison was a way better sleeper at this age. Not to be a downer on Miles as a sleeper, but Harrison was trained from the NICU and woke or we woke him up every four hours to feed him. It's a different story this time, he rules the roost. It's fine by me, I wouldn't have it any other way as long as I got to bring my baby home with me when I left the hospital. It honestly still feels surreal after having experienced what we did with Harrison.

During the day Miles has fallen into a routine of awake time from anywhere between 8 and 10 am in which he is very bright eyed and wants to look around. In the afternoon/evening I haven't figured out a pattern yet, but I am not sure he has either. At night he sleeps swaddled for about 3 hours between feedings. During the day feedings are every 2-3 hours, evenings every 1-3 hours. I've tried not swaddling him and he squirms and is vocal unless he is wrapped in his cocoon. We are still in survival mode as I referred to in the last post. I should nap, but I don't, there always seems to be too much to do.

Feeding: I have been exclusively breast feeding Miles since birth. He is growing at rate that has even surprised his doctor. I meant to blog about his latest weight check at his three week appointment. Miles tipped the scale at 7 lbs 5 oz and grew more than a half an inch. So apparently my body is doing it's job providing for him, however it's exhausting. Nursing is a touchy subject. I want to continue to breast feed him for as long as I can, but it's exhausting and I feel tied down to the house. I am a private person (I guess the blog doesn't prove to be a good example), but I am not a public nurser, nope; I am a car feeder. Getting out has been challenging and it seems once I get to where we are going it's time to eat again. I feel like a failure if I turn to formula, even just for a feeding or a two a day. Ugh. I felt the same with with Harrison. And it's not just the feeling of failure, it's a feeling of guilt for wanting to get out and do some things when my real job is to just be a mom right now.

I pump when I can. I skipped two whole days these past two days prepping the house to list it for sale (another post to come). I have about 15 bags of milk stored in the freezer. I felt a sense of guilt as I took two bags out to be defrost for this evening. He eats so frequently in the evening, we usually end up bottle feeding him around the busiest time of the evening so dinner/play/bath time flows as smoothly as it can in our household. He does great bottle feeding. The first few bottles were a challenge, but has since caught on. He is also more alert for bottle feedings vs. nursing. Nursing, he is a sleeper on the job and it takes 3 times as long, most days it doesn't bother me, but other times we need to get rolling and he just snoozing away. He gets a lot of feet tickling to keep him going. Right now he eats about 2 oz a feeding during the day and 3 oz feedings in the evenings and at night, my guess is as good as yours I am usually half asleep.

Personality: I think Miles is still figuring out what Miles likes/doesn't like just as much as we are. Some days he will take a pacifier, some days he won't. Some days he screams during bath time, other days I think he would prefer to just in in tub and chill out. One thing for sure, he like his vibrating chair. It's on a timer, the minute that things stops, he's awake protesting you turn it back on.  I am also discovering he is more snugly than Harrison, he likes to be held and knows the second you put him down. We haven't used the swing much...but both times he has been in it, he hasn't been impressed.

Witch hour (or more the hours) has returned. That's the evening fussy time. It's when holding, cuddling, feeding, burping, bouncer chair, nothing works. Most nights he turns the switch on, but once in a while he gives us a break, I REALLY like those evenings. :)

Appearance: I nick named him flaky and I catch myself calling him that often. I should probably stop before it becomes a habit. Harrison never had cradle cap or baby acne. I credit the incubators at the NICU for his hydrated smooth skin. Different story for Miles. Baby acne appeared about a week ago. It isn't all too bad, a little on his cheeks. However his skin is another story. His poor forehead and eye lids, and scalp is so dry. He hasn't advanced to cradle cap yet, but I slather him in lotion twice a day. Everyone says he looks like his big brother and we agree.

Size: I mentioned he has grown over a half an inch since his birth and put on at least a pound since then. He has own grown most of his preemie stuff. Some stuff that says up to 7 lbs and up 5-9 lbs still fits. He fits almost perfectly in newborn outfits now, the sleepers are still baggy length wise, but he filling them out in every other direction. He has some adorable 0-3 month clothing, I decided to have him try on an outfit yesterday and he drowned in it. By next month he will probably be out growing it. They really do grow like weeds don't they?

How's the rest of the family?

How is Momma doing: I feel more in control and that things aren't all over the place as they were in the first few weeks of mothering two instead of one. The last couple of days have been a bit of a pot hole on this road. Harrison has been sick (that is why this post is a late and many photos short). Remember how he had 14 ear infections in just over a year? Well this is ear infection 15. It's been almost a year since the last one, so we shouldn't complain. However ear infections make him so sick. He threw up last night, had diarrhea tracked through the kitchen, dining, room, living room, up the stair case, and through the bathroom this morning (just 10 minutes before the Realtors were to arrive) Ugh again. I cleaned him up and he spent most of the morning watching Mickey before he puked again. He is really needy and honestly I don't mind, I like the fact he wants to be snuggled and wants to held. What I don't like his seeing is his temperature rising, hot flushed cheeks and sick eyes.

This momma planned to work out and get her body back. Though honestly I am surprised it came back to where I am now without step on the treadmill. I did dust it off most recently and have full intentions of using it soon. I am determined to fit back into work pants by the time I return to work in January. Also another touchy subject, the return to work. There was no way we could afford for me to stay home after Harrison was born, especially with medical bills, etc. Not that we are wealthy rich now and far from it almost doesn't make sense for me to return to work paying out more than $1, 200 a month in childcare. At this point my decision is still to return to work, but between Doug and Is conversations, that hasn't been etched in stone yet.

On the photography side I planned on taking off until January with the exception of taking a few photos in between of some close friends. The inquiries have rolled in, in the last week, actually 7 requests in the last 3 days. I haven't returned any e-mails or phone calls because I don't know yet if and when I start up again because I feel like I really haven't had a break. I am probably driving people away but my lack of response and I feel bad. A couple of years ago when I started this business I never knew it would be what it is today. A part of me absolutely loves it and a part of me feels like with this second job, my work is never done. It's more of all work, no play.

Hows Harrison's Doing: Harrison is making me pretty proud these days. He's helpful, brings me Miles diapers, plugs, clothes; he is eager to help in anyway that he can. Harrison is still fascinated with poopy diaper changes, he's there for everyone of them he can be there for. Last night he got to feed Miles for the first time and he made me proud, he did a really good job. He lost a little focus when Doug brought out the camera and he asked for it to be put away. Yep, still not a fan of the camera. I got the notion to let him try to feed Miles the last 2 days I bottle fed Miles. Harrison got out his bottle at the same time and fed his toy baby a bottle. Harrison likes it best when Miles is awake. He will run to me and say, "Awake, Miles awake!" The other day during dinner Miles was in the swing and his eyes went in the motion of the swing opening and closing. All though dinner Harrison would repeat when looking at Miles, "Eyes opened, closed, opened, closed, opened, closed," etc. I feel like he is transitioning well overall to his role as a big brother.

How's Daddy Doing: He is getting about as much sleep as mommy. Daddy is getting up every morning to go into work early. Mommy gets Harrison ready and daddy comes back home, picks Harrison up, takes him to pre-school and goes back to work. It's overtime with the holiday season. It kind have makes me a scrooge around Christmas because I never get to see my husband and the kids never get to see their dad, it's like a single parent role from the end of October through the middle of January. Daddy doesn't like this anymore than Mommy does. The best thing is, though we are together for the holidays, something we didn't have for the first 8 years we were together.

With Miles arrival and Violet puppy, well being a puppy...We are spending the Holidays this year in town, no distance traveling for the Kelley's this year. Thanksgiving we will head to my parents house and for Christmas, I am traditional in that Harrison needs to wake up on Christmas morning in his own bed, in his own house. I have to say as scoogie as I can be about the holidays, I am finding myself already in the Christmas Spirit this year. I think (I know) I can credit the 3 year old we reside with. Last week we watch Frosty the Snowman together as a family for the first time along with Polar Express. Last night while under the weather Harrison watched Once Upon a Mickey Christmas and Twice Upon a Mickey Christmas. I almost pulled out National Lampoons Christmas Vacation the night. But if I watched it before Thanks Giving I  would break the tradition of watching it for the first time on Thanksgiving evening.

I haven't officially done his one month photo session, but I did pull out a hat and snap a few of these between a diaper change and feeding on his official one month. He decided quickly he didn't want me to take many, so here is a couple... I snapped before he shouted, "no more." I wanted to try again today, but home with Harrison home sick and our meeting with the Realtors it obviously didn't happen. I promise when I do get to the photos, it won't be a month until I post them like it was for his newborn session.

Notice how he looks so different in each shot. I hadn't noticed until I put them all together.

What I am looking forward to most next month: A smile.

Miles Newborn Photo Session

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Yes... I know, don't scold me. I should have posted these photos weeks ago.

The truth is... Its been a wild and crazy adventure learning to parent two children. Its been more of a survival mode than anything. Photography has taken a back seat. I struggled with doing Miles newborn session, I mean STRUGGLED. On top of trying to do his sessions I was committing myself to sessions which I reflect back to week 1 and 2 of maternity leave and want to shake myself and say, "What were you thinking." I know when my friend Jenna read that last line she will be nodding in agreeing. I don't know how many times she has called me crazy in the last few weeks.

With my frustration in Miles session, my over commitment to client sessions I started to doubt my passion. With this I didn't take out the camera much and I beat myself when I did. I looked at everything as work.

Where I was in these last 3 weeks? Worn out. I think I was afraid to admit defeat then but reflecting back now. I know I was defeated, one person can't do it all.

Thankfully my friend Jenna invited me up to her house to shoot a newborn session in her studio. I fell in love with the light.

Here are  few of my favorites from Miles first 13 days

The Twins

Saturday, November 10, 2012

Congratulations are in order?!?!

Fraternal twins. One washer, one dryer. They made their debut at 4:15 pm on November 8, 2012. They were transported and handled with care from the Sears team.

After much debate to repair our washer or buy a new one, buying a new one just made sense with our current washer needing over $600 in repairs and our dryer already been repaired twice in the 7.5 years of life.

Our old dryer sold in less than 24 hours on craigslist.

I have to admit the latest delivery was not what I really wanted...I would have preferred a new full frame Canon camera or new Mac for editing. The day we purchased the twins I was bitter. It was one of those days I just wanted to turn my adult switch off and be that Toys R Us kid.

Now they have arrived and now are in place (and the bill hasn't arrived yet)...I found myself excited to start the first load, but Doug beat me to it. Ugh.

These days I wash at least 2-3 loads a day, so the investment is worth it most definitely and it kind of compares to full frame camera or a Mac, right? I mean they both are electronic.

Ok. so it doesn't compare, but I better stop complaining because a camera and Mac won't wash out spit up and poop (but I could edit them out:). Yep, that is the truth.

Here is first shot of the twins...

Please tell me your jealous. They are quite stunning.

We debated on front load verses traditional. After reading consumer reviews, we settled on traditional. The overall maintenance and cleaning on front loads were enormous in comparison to this model. And big news, not only are these digital they also play music. Yes, I am not testing if your paying attention, they really do play music. Thankfully Doug disabled that function after the first wash.

Linked 52: Wind

Thursday, November 8, 2012

So I am pulling out a favorite photo taken on my last spring break of college. Actually I should clarify, this was my first spring break vacation in my 5 years of college. I usually spent the week pulling extra shifts at one of my 3 jobs (yeah I still don't know how I did it all).

Well, being it was last semester of college, I was bound and determined I was not going to spend it working. Instead Doug and I took a flight to Las Angeles California. We did some shopping on Rodeo Drive, walked the Holly Wood Walk of Fame, went to the Price as Right show (when Bob Parker was still hosting), spent some time driving in the mountains and walking the beautiful sandy beaches.

It was cooler than expected during our trip (maybe the 60s), but for Minnesotans in March, these temps were a dream.

The photo below was taking by us as we strolled along the beach one afternoon. It's one of my favorite photos of us. It's framed on my desk at work and I glance at it often. We are snuggled up with beach towels, have our shades on, wind blowing our hair in every direction, so imperfect, but perfect all at the same time.

I think what I love most about this photo, is that I see us as a couple, so young, so in love. Not that has changed, but with two busy work lives, 2 children, 4 pets, a mortgage, car payments and don't get me started on student loan payments you can easily see how a part of your life when it was just the two of you gets pushed to the side.

Sometimes the wind blows in the direction that evokes a little memory...

Much love to my hubby! xoxo

Where does the wind take you?

iphone photo dump

Monday, November 5, 2012

I am trying really hard to #1 take more photos and #2 upload the photos and #3 place an actual photo order.

I am baby stepping updating photos around our house. I haven't updated a frame in 13 months. I think photographers are the worst at this.

Last week I printed a collage of Miles birth photos (which you will get to see...I promise!) I want to put together a video with music, but at this rate I hope to get it done by his first birthday. Do you need a preview of those photos? ClickHERE. Oh and grab a tissue or two and get comfy, it's an amazing post.

I am in the midst of trying to upload additional photos to make more prints, but my account says it's full. I tried to log under my second account, same thing and then I tried Doug's account, same thing. Apparently there are technical difficulties.

At least I am getting caught up posting iphone captures...

Linked 52: Texture

Friday, November 2, 2012

Alright...I'll fess up. I did raid Harrison's Halloween loot last night. I mean you do have to "test" the candy...right?

As I devoured a piece or two (or three of four)...I snapped these.

Did you ever realize how many textures are in candy alone? From a crunchy Butterfinger to a smooth and creamy Reeses....YUM, I interuppt this entry for another piece.

Happy Halloween!

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Halloween = Amazing.

I am not a huge Halloween fan...that is until this year. Harrison brought me back to my childhood. Miles stayed back at home and Doug and I took Harrison out trick or treating. This was our first outing with just the three of us since Miles was born.

Harrison chowed down on sloppy joes eagerly put on his costume when he got home from pre-school. We've been talking about trick or treating all week...he was ready to go get candy and I don't think anything could have stopped him. We met up with our friends, Kyle and Kristi and their near 2 year old Micah and set out on our candy adventure.

This kid know how to melt the heart of homeowners handing out candy. His trick or treat and thank you---priceless and said at EVERY SINGLE HOUSE. He couldn't impressed me more and he was so outgoing and social. Oh and if your pumpkin went dark after we were at your house...Harrison likes to blow out fire, guess it makes sense based on this costume...

Will there be candy for breakfast?

The Great Pumpkin Patch

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Miles is having a snugly day doesn't want his mommy to put him down and I refuse to nap with a baby in my bed...so I'll take the opportunity to update the blog which hasn't had near enough love since Mile's debut. Who would of thought a newborn would keep me this busy? I had a plan for "catch up" of everything on leave---that plan went out the window on day three.

PUMPKINS

We head to Bronk's for our pumpkins every year to pick our own pumpkins...this year was no expectation but instead of a family of 3, we were a family of 4. Miles was just 4 days old when we made the trip. It was cool out and Miles was fussy, so the trip was cut short, but we did find 4 pumpkins to take home and make ours.

PUMPKIN CARVING

We always wait to carve our pumpkins until the day before Halloween. However this year we carved them on Monday night because Doug had to work Tuesday evening so we could spend Halloween Trick or Treating with Harrison together. Miles will spend the evening snuggling with his Auntie Potter. This will be a good opportunity for Harrison to spend time with just the two of us.

It was a little challenging trying to capture the pumpkin guts this year. Miles has his crabby time from 6-8 at night, so to be frank I was in the middle of nursing him to settle him down while snapping these. The verdict? Poor photo quality and I need at least another arm and stronger muscles to hold up the camera one handed...bring on the weights and extra appendage.

Oh and turns out two pumpkins rotted...so we were down to two.

Can you tell which one is Harrison's?

 Happy Halloween!

35 Months

Monday, October 29, 2012

Less than one month until we have a 3 year old! I still can't believe how fast time has gone from the day he was born to last night when I tucked him into bed.

He is such an amazing kid, with an imagination that runs wild from dawn to dusk...turning every stick into a tool, rocks into pizza, a broom into a rocket and this is just the beginning! There are still times where I wish I could just hit the pause button in life to suck in every ounce of that moment, but at the same time I can't wait to see what he learns next, what animal will he crawl around on the floor and pretend to be after dinner or personally my favorite...How many times is going to ask me to watch Mickey In Space tonight?

Speaking of turning 3---birthday invites went out last week. This had to be the quickest and most successful photo session of all time.

Too adorable not to share!

I still have some party planning to do, but we took the stress out of possibly (and now having) a newborn at the time of his birthday celebration and planned his party at our favorite local pizza restaurant. My friend Amanda can create about anything off of Pinterest...She's already been hard at work on some decorations. I don't plan to do an overload on decorations as I did in years past, but then again...his birthday party last year was supposed to be smaller in number than his first birthday and that didn't happen!

I plan on taking a Harrison and Mommy trip to Party City to pick up some Mickey party plates, the pinata and other Mickey Mouse gear sometime in the next couple of weeks. One thing for sure, there will be a PINK cake at this boy's party. We have been doing a lot of talking about his birthday and birthday party and in each conversation he talks about having PINK cake and PINK ice cream for his birthday. I guess I don't have to tell you what his favorite color is!

Harrison is doing as well as any expected near 3 year old could do with a new baby in the house. There is still a lot of whining, but a lot of that stems from having a new puppy in the house. He loves to play with her and often provokes her to get wild and then decides all of sudden he is done playing and puppy isn't. She's chewed up 6 of his plugs (pacifiers) in the last 3 weeks. Speaking of these plugs...We do have FULL intentions of weaning him from them, but with adding a baby and new puppy to our household in the last month...I'd say he has enough on his plate right now. I can assure you he will not be that 5 year old with a plug in is mouth going down an aisle at Target. In fact the plug is banned from Pre-School and not allowed in public places.

Developmentally he is doing fantastic. He graduates from the Birth to 3 program next month. Based on all the requirements for the program, Harrison no longer qualifies for services. Language which he struggled the most with, he has excelled immensely in the last 4-5 months. He talks in complete sentences and he talks all the time. Last week his instructor Molli worked on him writing the letter "H." He ended up making two Hs himself and then Molli said, "he turned the Hs into rockets." There is that imagination that I LOVE!

It's hard to believe after next month I won't be doing monthly updates for Harrison anymore. I was going to stop after he turned two, but I enjoy these updates too much to stop then so I decided on 36 months. There will still be plenty of updates and plenty of photos. I honestly haven't picked up the camera much since I started maternity leave, but I hope when we break out of survival mode here I can get back into clicking those everyday candid shots that I absolutely love and adore more than any posed shot.

35 things about 35 months

  1. Favorite food is pancakes
  2. Likes to help wash the dishes
  3. If given the choice between cookies and grapes, he will choose grapes
  4. Loves Fishy pretzels (he likes food, can you see that pattern?)
  5. If he isn't walking or running, he gallops
  6. Started singing nursery songs--- he likes "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and the annoying Fisher Price, "Counting, Counting, Counting is so much fun" song.
  7. Caught him dancing the other day and boy does he have the moves. I only have a 16 second recording of dance, but those 16 seconds are totally priceless! (I'll post the video on here, if I can remember how).
  8. He repeats actions asked in television shows...Like get up and dance or repeat after me. I love to watch him watch television, never a dull moment.
  9. Considering pulling wearing the pull up at night...he's been dry every morning for more than 2 weeks. He thinks it's funny that Miles poops in his pants.
  10. He thinks Daddy can fix anything.
  11. We find him taking himself to the bathroom by himself more often, sometimes we don't even know he went unless he tells us.
  12. Loves to be outside...It could be pouring rain and he still insists we go to the park or play outside.
  13. Has a brand new Power Wheels and does a good job driving. His favorite feature? "I can go backwards." He even gave me a ride in his new set of wheels. I honestly think Daddy loves the car as much as Harrison---he took it out for a spin too.
  14. He likes to put off bed time...ex. have to go potty, he is hungry, NEED to watch Mickey or will randomly tune you out and play with his toys until you start to bringing out the threats.
  15. He is shy around people he doesn't know. I love to see how he interacts and his excitement when neighbors stop by. He especially loves our next door neighbor Henry and his Auntie Potter and friends from daycare...not to forget to mention his excitement when I mention going to Grandma's Di house.
  16. Loves books. We just bought two more yesterday. I refuse to believe a kid could ever have too many books.
  17. Latest imagination soar? Pretending to be a SUPER-HERO. He "flys" all over our house."
  18. Getting self sufficient on dressing himself...needs help mostly with shirts and socks.
  19. Getting better at sharing and often does so without prompts
  20. Has been corrupted at pre-school and will randomly say, "Go Packers." We have our baby sitter Elizabeth to blame for this.
  21. He loves to help with anything and everything, even if it's just hitting the start button on the microwave.
  22. Just went through a big growth spurt, he tips the scale and 29.5 lbs. His 3 year check up is November 30.
  23. He looks for approval in everything he does, he loves praises
  24. Learning his ABCs. He refused to practice them for months, but now is showing an interest again. He can sing A-G.
  25. Counting... is a little difficult. For months he counted flawlessly to 1-10, actually 1-12. But most recently he insists it's 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10. I guess he prefers short hand like his dad.
  26. He likes Miles. The other day I caught him while I was mopping our bedroom rubbing Miles head in the next room and saying, "Nice Baby."
  27. Bath time...still a favorite of his!
  28. Least favorite thing to do in a day? Get ready for bed.
  29. He is learning to play independently but would rather have someone play with him.
  30. Apologizes and says "please" and "thank you" without prompts.
  31. Starting to watch full movies...We will attempt his first movie in the theater this winter.
  32. He likes more active play verses time on the ipad or watching tv.
  33. Favorite snuggle? Yellow blanket---which reminds me I was going to wash that while he's at pre-school today.
  34. Showing more affection with hugs and kisses
  35. Quite the people pleaser...will do practically anything to gain your approval. Kind of feel like I got this one out of a text book. I guess these stages in development bring me back to all my college classes in child psychology.

As for his mom? Hey that's me! I am struggling with finding the balance between Harrison and Miles time. Good thing is we are still new to this and I will figure this out! And whatever mistakes that I may make along this road hopefully he will forget!

Linked 52: Memories

Thursday, October 25, 2012

I can't believe it's been just over two years since I took up photography as a part-time profession rather than just a hobby. The amount of images(memories) I have on this lap top and 2 external hard drives reaches near 210,000. But when it comes down to quantity vs. quality, less is more.

Only word one word for this capture, "Love."

I Am No Super Mom

Monday, October 22, 2012

Kudos to anyone that makes it through this entire post of a little bit of everything in the last 8 days.

Just as the title says, "I am no Super Mom." I often look back to my college years and ask myself, "How did you do it?" I worked 3 jobs, went to school full time, studied (got straight A's) and had a social life. Crazy right?

Well I am here to say that doesn't compare to transitioning from one child to two. I feel like I am busier on maternity leave than I was balancing my job, second job, family and everything else. Last week I had a to do list for every single day, I even had to include showering on that check list as an essential thing to do.

I had to go into work last week for a couple of hours to tie up some loose ends and change my voicemail etc. I have to admit, it felt pretty awesome to state in my message I won't be back until January. January itself will be busy. I was promoted just days before Miles arrived and will start that new position when I get back from leave. However I failed to blog about this sooner, but daycare itself has presented issues in the last month. Just a couple of weeks ago I received notice that there would not be a spot open for Miles until March 23. I later found out that was an error and there was a new start date of February 9th. Two days before Miles was born the date again moved up to between January 28th and February 8th. I am hoping my some miracle there is an opening sooner than the 28th. Between now and then is the search for short term daycare.

My new car got dinged up. Yep my 35 week appt. my car got another car door slammed into it. Thank goodness the person that caused that damage was there when I came out from my appointment and she gave me her insurance information. In a few weeks my car gets a band-aid to the damage to the sum of $457.00. Between car insurance claim, we needed to get my AFLAC insurance coverage along with my short term disability through work in order along with adding Miles to our insurance claims. I am insuranced out.

Photography. I have a love/hate relationship with my passion. I love the good moments and hate the bad. For the most part people have been pretty understanding that I just gave birth 8 days ago and I won't be able to do their Christmas card photos, but then there are other clients/potential clients that just don't get that my priority is my family. I also found out yesterday evening someone has created an e-mail in my name and is sending a person degrading e-mails. Come on seriously people as if I don't have enough on my plate. On the flip side I got a personal message from another local photographer whom I haven't met in person yet that was thoughtful and sweet. Like my mom said, "More good people exist, it's just the bad people that make a greater impression."

I shot 4 sessions this weekend (yes 8 days after birth) and have a total of 7 sessions waiting to be edited, not to mention one brief session of Miles I attempted last week. In talking to other photographers they have said, "photographing your own newborn is the most difficult." I am here to say, "they aren't lying, total frustration." It's a pull that you can photograph other kids, but you can't even photograph your own. This afternoon I photographed two three year olds and afterwards asked myself, "why can I not photograph my own nearly three old?" Anyone who does photography reading this can surely understand how I feel. On Friday this week I am visiting my friend/photographer Jenna and hoping I get few more images. I don't doubt Jenna won't get a few for sure.

Harrison is taking the transition to big brotherhood hard. There is a lot and I mean a lot of whining. He started showing aggression towards the puppy and the kitties. We are constantly reminding him to be nice. As for his actual reaction towards Miles? Mostly ignoring. He seems fascinated with poopy diapers and wanting Miles to be naked. Harrison is learning the power of having to wait. I don't know if it's killing him more or killing me more. I feel bad when I nursing Miles and Harrison is grabbing my arm saying, "Momma come, Momma come," or  "Momma give baby to daddy, or "Momma let's go outside." It's been nearly impossible to go outside with the rainy cool weather we have had, it's no place for a preemie. I feel like I am shipping Harrison to Doug most of the time and don't feel that I am anywhere near the balance of two children. My worries and fears Harrison is going to think I don't love him the same that he won't want anything to do with me. I guess pretty much all the same feelings I had when we found out we were expecting for the second time...I guess it's just reality that has hit me. I know in time we will work out a schedule there will be Harrison and Mommy time and Miles and Mommy time until then it will be survival mode.

Post-Partum the second time around. I am feeling pretty good. Pain wise it's been more of intense healing process. The doctor said, "you did deliver a much bigger baby this time around." For all those women that have delivered a baby larger than 6lbs? You people deserve an award. My varicose veins are almost completely gone, within the next two weeks I would not even expect to see the faint lines were they once were. Belly wise I have a ways to go comparing one birth to the next. One more week of rest and I plan to dust off the treadmill. It also probably help if I didn't have a supply of Butter Fingers in my night stand. I have been packing up my maternity clothes little by little. It was a very good morning this morning as I buttoned up my favorite pair of non-maternity GAP jeans (I love Gap).

About time I move on to Miles. He has two doctor appointments under his belt. We went on Wednesday last week for his initial appointment and weight check with his pediatrician at Gundersen. On Wednesday Miles weighed 5 lbs 12.5 oz with a billiruben count at 15.6. He lost 8 % of his body weight since birth which is completely normal and though the billi level higher than normal he didn't need phototherapy for jaundice. On Friday Miles saw the pediatrician again for a weight/billi check. He did fantastic for his blood draw and his weight was up 15 grams (5 lbs 13.1 oz) and billi count was 15.0. Both welcomed good news. 15 grams doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a positive step as he is gaining rather than losing. The doctor said, "you couldn't as for a better looking 35 weeker, especially size wise." I replied, "I don't have trouble growing babies, it's just keeping them in...I guess I bake them faster." Miles goes back on Thursday this week for his two week appointment.

After starting off rocky feeding is going well. Nursing is new to me. I pumped for Harrison, never once nursed him. I am trying to pump too to increase the volume and start freezing a supply. I haven't been very diligent in pumping like I should and I promised myself I would make that part of my schedule starting tomorrow. As of now he hasn't done well bottle feeding...he seems to prefer being nursed. At the appointment the doctor said that often babies choose one way over another.

What is sleep? Miles started off a super sleeper but in these most recent days (nights) he has had other plans. He was up every 1.5 the other night. This could have been partly my fault as I didn't swaddle him. Last night I had a little lecture with him and wrapped him up in his little cocoon and he has slept fairly well, but hasn't fed the best. I am sure he will make up for the feeds today and some point. This boy can eat, just like his big brother.

Doug goes back to work today. Harrison will go to pre-school and this will be my first adventure with just Miles, I and our furry crew. Violet (the puppy) is doing a little better with potty training, but this is no walk in the park by any means. Our house is bare with all the area rugs and front and back rugs pulled up and a baby gate to every single room to our house...kind of mini prison as I call it. My hope is in few weeks of training we can call her house trained. I have ever single appendage crossed. Other wise she is a pretty good puppy. Shes chewed a few things up namely one being the carpet on the stairs and part of the banister, she hasn't been much a biter and she knows her name well and when she is in trouble. I can't believe how much she has grown in the last few weeks. I'll certainly get some photos of her up again, hopefully before she is full grown.

I also want to take the time in this post to thank everyone for their kind words and all the blue gifts and all the BIG BROTHER gifts. These 8 days have been wild and crazy, but I wouldn't change a thing. This is life.

I'm am feeling ambitious and hope to post Harrison's birthday invites (that went out last week), pumpkin patch photos, a few newborn shots of Miles along with some everyday shots, we will see how far I get.

And congratulations, you made it through this post! I promise photos in the next post!

Linked 52: On the Shelf

Thursday, October 18, 2012

It's been a busy week to say the least. If you haven't checked out the two posts below, you should :).

I apologize for my lack of creativity for this post and to my fellow Linked 52 photographers for not commenting on your posts nearly enough, you guys deserve it! But I am glad I committed myself to Linking a theme each week. In fact this was a reason enough to haul out the camera tonight. Thank you for all that continue to follow me.

On the shelf...

This white haired. blue eyed, incredible little boy was born 11 weeks premature, but certainly you can't tell. This boy can eat. The most common phrase he says, (besides being a superhero right now) is, "I hungry." On his pre-school daily report I opened up this evening read, "he ate two burgers for lunch, he was very hungry." That's our meat loving burger boy.

He finds unique ways of trying to make it to the snack shelf. One afternoon I walked into the kitchen and found three of his stools lined up and he was plotting a way to get to the shelf. When I am in the kitchen he begs me to sit on the counter and "just see" what's on the shelf...This evening was no exception.
