This all started about a month ago---the coughing, fevers, boogers and puking.
Miles had his first round of RSV a week after starting daycare. Since then he has been constantly on the mend.
The most recent bout of concern started Monday late evening when Miles started to run a temp. However Tuesday morning it was gone and he was back to himself. Tuesday evening was a repeat of Monday evening. Again in the morning he was fever free. However by Wednesday afternoon he woke up from nap with a fever or 101.6. When I got him home despite the Tylenol it continued to climb to 102.5 and despite additional doses of Tylenol his temperature had risen to 103.4.
Alarmed by the climbing temp despite fever reducer Doug called the ER to question at what point to bring him in if he fever continues to climb. The ER instructed us that if he fever persisted over 103 we needed to bring him in. Finally after a third dose of Tylenol it seemed as though it took effect and his temp lowered to 102.5.
I tried to make an appointment to get in with his primary doctor today, but he was booked, so we saw a different physician. The appointment was almost hour and a half long. It was confirmed almost immediately he had a right ear infection (Harrison was 5 months old when he got his first ear infection too---that led us on a road to 2 sets of tubes). But they wanted to be sure that was the cause of his high temps and he was also so congested both in his chest and head.
To help clear out his lungs we tried albuterol inhalations. The doctor came back to listen to his lungs for a second time after the albuterol . She said, "that didn't really help his breathing, if anything that helped me his his wheezing better." She then looked in his throat and it was full of secretions which explains why is puking 2-3 sometimes 4 times a day. The doctor then left to consult with our primary doctor. She came back listened to his lungs again. We then had his 02 level checked it, which was good at 97%. She listened to his lungs for the third time and said, "At this young of an age I really worry about having that many secretions as he has, but his 02 level is reassuring." "I talked to Gerhard about steroids, but if the albuterol didn't help his breathing, he's doubtful that steroids would help right now, either inhaled or orally." "I think what he has is viral--another strain of RSV."
We need to continue to do a good job keeping him hydrated especially with his puking. If he still has a fever on Saturday, he should be seen again. The grunting/wheezing he is doing is due to him working harder to breathe (this stuff is scary) If he starts having more difficulty breathing he will need to be seen again obviously. I think once the antibiotic takes hold and helps keep his fever at bay with a combination of Tylenol and IB-profin we should be out of the woods. Until then we cuddle, feed and wait.
