Ambassador Family---Team Baby Harrison!
We are excited to be Winona County's ambassador family for the March of Dimes Walk taking place April, 18, 2010 at Lake Park, 2PM!
It is our hope that team Baby Harrison can raise awareness of prematurity and what March of Dimes has done and what they are currently doing to prevent pre-term deliveries.
You don’t know how the research today can effective your tomorrow. March of Dimes impacted the life of our son and family is so many ways. Our son Harrison was born 11weeks premature. He spent more than 7 weeks in the NICU. During his hospitalization he suffered from respiratory distress syndrome and he received surfactant. Surfactant keeps the air sacs in the lungs from collapsing making breathing easier. This is just one medical breakthrough made possible by the March of Dimes. During pregnancy I took folic acid which through research funded by the March of Dimes has decreased birth defects significantly. We didn’t know just how much March of Dimes did as an organization, until our family was put in this very scary situation. March of dimes advocacy for preemies helps experts continue research for prevention for pre-term labor...so that more babies can be born at full term. Without the research done through the March of Dimes, our son may not be here today. March of Dimes helps miracles happen. Harrison is our miracle. Thank you March of Dimes!

Mr. Harrison becomes Mr. Grabby!
Harrison---Are you the same baby that we know?
I can't believe how much Harrison can change in just one short week! Over the past week Harrison has started to use his hands to grab on to anything and everything. One of his favorite things to grab is our shirts and not let go...white knuckled and all, he is holding on for dear life! If his hands aren't clenched to us he is flailing them in the air-- all over the place. It's like he is saying, "here, I am over here," when he is laying in his cradle or pack and play. As far as reaching out for objects (mobile toys)...he is almost there. Reaching out for objects is a late 3-4 month milestone. This is reassuring for his development.
Besides his grabby little paws...he LOVES to be jostled on our knees. Bouncy, bouncy until our legs give out...and boy can he give us a work out. He can qualify as our own personal trainer. Harrison is also building up our biceps! With his continued weight gain (which we think is between 11-12 lbs)we are hiking him up and around. We didn't realize how much he weighs until we see other people struggling to keep their arms in a upright position when they are holding him.
Speaking of holding him---that is yet another change. Harrison doesn't prefer to be held in the traditional rocking position unless he is sleeping soundly. He will scoot and squirm and squawk until you place him in a upright position facing you. He really prefers the face to face communication. He delights in us talking to him more than ever, and I believe we are close to hearing him giggle for the first time. Sometimes he gets so excited his legs kick at a record speed. I often hold on to his legs and move them in a running position and say "faster, faster" and he grins in delight. We also do the YMCA with him along with Patty-Cake, which he seems to enjoy. Another skill he is acquiring is being able to support his weight when you hold him in a standing position. He sticks out his legs and pushes himself up (this is typically a 4 month skill---yeah)! In fact last night for about a half hour straight, that is all we did... I would try to set him down for us to do something else, and he would protest to stand up---so that is what we did.
Last, but not least, let's talk about crying. Harrison definitely lets us know (and probably all of our neighbors) when he is hungry this is for sure. While his bottle is warming up and he is wailing if we start to talk to him...he stops crying, same as in the car when I am driving. The hardest part of this change is trying to figure out when he wants attention verses him being hungry. Lately we have been guessing wrong on a regular basis.
Like I said...these are big changes with our big boy! (And... all within the last week---AMAZING)!
As I mentioned earlier, his doctor has said that he making his developmental milestones. In the coming weeks we have a NICU developmental follow-up to track his development.

Unlike the baptism---there was puking, pooping, crying, and grunting at the shower...but it's his party, his day, he can run the show!

God Gave Us You!
Harrison was baptized in faith on Sunday, March 7, 2010. Not only will Doug and I will make sure he will grow in faith, but his sponsors Amanda (my good friend) and his Uncle Eric will see that God is an important part of his life.
Harrison did so well during the service (I am taking credit for his performance from the lectured I gave him the night before). I told Harrison, "No puking, no pooping, no grunting, no crying"... And he didn't do any of the above during the actual baptism! The pastor gave us two thumbs up when we sat back down and she said, "We made it--no puke, no poop!" As parents we couldn't have been prouder! Shortly after that, he let some rumbles go and then a poop! Whew...close call!
We got some wonderful baptism gift keep sakes. Everything we received is greatly appreciated!

Harrison and Sammy Kitty have been keeping mom busy. I thought I'd better blog about some updates before I forget what has been happening around here.
We have had return of some reflux, which wasn't making Harrison a very happy baby. He had been eating about 5 ounces every 4 hours or so. We decided it would be best to cut down his feedings to 4 ounces every 3-4 hours. Harrison being switched to complete formula within the next week, so we will have to pay extra attention to any changes in his eating. Reflux has began to get better over the past day or so, and spitting up has decreased some. So...there is a light at the end of this reflux tunnel. Last night was pretty exciting as well... Harrison went 5 hours between feedings. That is the longest he has gone without feeding since birth. This gives me a glimmer of hope that sleeping through the night may be within reach by the time he starts daycare. Oh and before I forget to mention...Harrison does quite a bit multitasking---he does his duty during the middle of every feeding...We stop to burp, poop and then continue the feeding. As they say, what goes in, must come out!
It's been a little hectic around here (not because of Harrison), but our cat Sammy has been really sick and in a lot of pain. He is full time job himself. I couldn't imagine having twins. Hopefully he will start feeling better soon!
Bring on the warmer weather, Harrison and Mommy are tired of being cooped up!

As I mentioned in one of the last blog updates... We have a serious case of Spring Fever! Well, today it finally hit the 40 degree (45 degrees to be exact). We jumped on the oppertunity to catch some fresh air and walked around a couple of blocks.

Hobby Lobby!
No, it's not what you are thinking... I didn't get a Hobby Lobby Visa...but I am not saying that I don't want one either :). Tonight Harrison and I made a trip to the scrap booking section at Hobby Lobby. I am in a scrapping frenzy! I seriously think that I could live in this store! But looking at the pocketbook...it's the last trip I make there until I go back to work. The problem is, I want everything!
But back to why I am blogging about Hobby Lobby! Harrison loved the shopping trip and I am not just saying that. He wasn't content in his car seat, but once I scooped him up, he was taken back in amazement. He even gave some smiles to those that passed him. I don't think I have ever seen him as happy and as bright eyed before! I would have posted a photo of the shopping trip, but I didn't realize I had our camera in my purse until I got back in the car...there goes a Kodak moment!
To sum this shopping trip up... I got what I went in for and I am sure glad he loves Hobby Lobby...future trips are inevitable.

You are invited to join the party! Yes, the one we have every night at the Kelley household... We usually watch a little of Cartoon Network because nothing else is on t.v. besides informercials (I demand better programming), read a book, and have a little tummy time. I don't see sleeping through the night happening anytime soon! :)
So...you would or at least I thought we would have some type of schedule by now...like a daily routine. Not happening! :) I keep putting off the need for a real schedule...but in less than a month I have to return to work, so the day for a schedule with become inevitable....but until then, we party like animals at 2 am...so if you can't sleep or are just plain bored, chances are you will find us up and about, so join the party!
To sum it all up? We have the best alarm clock ever...it's the only alarm that I actually want to get up for, even if it is to clean up poop or get puked on! We love you Harrison!
